BNP standing committee meeting in the evening

BNP standing committee is going to hold a meeting on Saturday evening with the senior leaders to determine the further proceedings in absence of party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia after declaring the verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

BNP press wing officer Shamsuddin Didar has confirmed that the meeting is scheduled to start at 6 pm at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.

BNP Vice Chairmen, Chairperson’s Advisors and Joint Secretary Generals are invited in the meeting.

Judge of a special court Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman awarded five years imprisonment to Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on Thursday. After declaring the verdict the former Prime Minister was taken to old central jail in old Dhaka under strict security.

Besides, BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, former Principal Secretary Kamal Uddin Siddique, founder of BNP Ziaur Rahman’s nephew Mominur Rahman, former Magura lawmaker Quazi Salimul Huq Kamal and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed were also awarded imprisonment.

After delivering the verdict, BNP in a press briefing said on that night, according to the party constitution Tarique Rahman is the Acting Chairman of BNP.

According to the section 5 (c) of BNP’s constitution, Senior Vice Chairman of the party is designated as the second powerful person. In absence of the Chairperson the Senior Vice Chairman can call the standing committee and executive committee meeting and also can exercise other power of the Chairperson. According to the party constitution nobody except the two are given power to run BNP. Because, nobody except the two can call the policy making meeting of the party. And also no decision is approved if the meeting is held.

Moreover according to the section 8 of BNP’s constitution, Senior Vice Chairman will act as Acting Chairman of the party during temporary absence of the Chairperson.
