Preliminary Investigation Report Submission on Secretariat Fire Delayed by 1 Day

The submission of the preliminary investigation report on the fire incident at the Secretariat, originally scheduled for today, has been delayed by one day. The report will now be submitted to the Chief Advisor on Tuesday, December 31.

On Monday (December 30) afternoon, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs and head of the investigation committee, Nasimul Gani, shared this information with journalists.

He said, "We were initially given until December 30 to submit the report. However, we have just requested an extension of one more day from the Cabinet Division. Some tests are scheduled to be conducted tonight. Once the results are in, we will be able to submit the preliminary report tomorrow, Tuesday."

Last Wednesday (December 25) late at night, a devastating fire broke out at Building No. 7 of the Secretariat, damaging floors 6, 7, 8, and 9. The eighth and ninth floors suffered the most, with most of the documents there being completely destroyed.

In response to the incident, the government formed an eight-member high-level investigation committee led by Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday. The committee was tasked with identifying the cause and source of the fire and submitting a preliminary investigation report within three days.

Other members of the committee include the Secretary of Housing, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief of Fire Service and Civil Defense as the member secretary, an explosives expert from the Armed Forces, and three experts from BUET—a civil engineer, a chemical engineer, and an electronics engineer.

Meanwhile, on Monday (December 30) at noon, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Sub-Assistant Engineer of Public Works, outlined the damage caused by the fire at the Secretariat. He stated that approximately 200 rooms on four floors of Building No. 7 were affected by the fire.

Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said, "About 200 rooms on four floors of Building No. 7 were damaged by the fire. The exact cause of the fire can only be determined after the investigation is complete."

Regarding whether the building will remain usable, he added, "Several high-level teams have conducted investigations so far. The next steps will be taken based on the opinions of expert teams. However, initial observations suggest that the building can be repaired. The final decision will be made after the investigation report is received."

Whenever we aim to permanently rid the country of fascism, some individuals and groups disguised as civil society stand in opposition. If necessary, we will resist them as well." Injured participants from the uprising were also present at the program. Earlier, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced plans to release the "July Proclamation" after the uprising. However, the organization withdrew this decision after the government declared its intent to issue the proclamation.

March for Unity / Family Members of Injured, Martyred Gather at Shaheed Minar

At the call of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, students, citizens, and families of the injured and martyrs of the uprising are gathering at Shaheed Minar to join the "March for Unity." Since Tuesday (31 December) morning, people from various parts of the country have started assembling at the Shaheed Minar area. During the gathering, students and citizens chanted slogans such as "Why are the killers free while my brothers are in the grave?" "Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka," "Injustice will be swept away in a flood of blood,” “Abu Sayed, Mugdho, the battle is not over yet," and "Hang the killers, hang Hasina." Some were seen holding banners, placards, and flags as part of their preparation. Students and citizens from districts such as Chattogram, Natore, Panchagarh, and Sirajganj arrived early in the morning and took positions around Shaheed Minar and Dhaka University. Various groups of students were seen gathering in and around the Shaheed Minar. Many revolutionaries were also seen seated in chairs in front of it. Incidentally, The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement had planned to read out a declaration of independence at Shaheed Minar today. Hasina Viewed Religious Scholars as Threats: Sarjis Alam

During the July-August mass uprising, the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir played a significant role as comrades by being present on the streets, providing advice, and assisting in critical steps. Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizens' Committee, made this statement while attending the member conference of Chhatra Shibir at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Tuesday (December 31). He said, "No one can suppress the truth forever. It is only a matter of time before the truth comes out. From our position, we always want to speak clearly. Over the past 16 years, Sheikh Hasina has labelled and played the blame game against anyone she considered a potential threat to her power. This game has claimed the lives of many innocent people. Sheikh Hasina even viewed religious scholars as threats and attacked, sued, persecuted, and killed them." This prominent organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement further stated, "Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and many other individuals and organizations faced severe challenges under Sheikh Hasina's rule, which made it nearly impossible for them to live freely in independent Bangladesh. From our perspective, we want to say one thing: many of the narratives Sheikh Hasina tried to present about you and others are no longer believed by the current generation of Bangladesh. The present generation has enough conscience to identify and expel fascists." Today, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid rich tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who died last week.
