The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will undergo restructuring, including changes to its name and uniform, as confirmed by Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
During a press briefing on Tuesday (February 18) after a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat, the advisor shared these updates.
The Home Affairs Advisor mentioned that the committee had discussed the potential changes to RAB’s name and uniform. The agency will be restructured, and feedback is being collected regarding these changes. A final decision on the name and uniform will be made in the next committee meeting. Discussions about the new name are still ongoing.
RAB was formed in 2004 as a specialized police unit to tackle top criminals, dangerous militants, and notorious offenders.
However, over time, the force has faced accusations of human rights violations. As a result, the United States imposed sanctions on RAB during the Awami League government's tenure.
In addition, the Interim Government's Enforced Disappearance Investigation Commission reported that out of the 400 disappearance cases analyzed, RAB was found to be involved in 172 of them.
Regarding the recent incident on Monday night in Uttara, where a couple was attacked with a machete, the Home Affairs Advisor stated, "The individuals responsible for this attack have been quickly brought to justice. If we hadn’t acted after the crime, you could have questioned whether we were doing our job."
