After nearly 15 years, Bangladesh and Pakistan held foreign secretary-level talks. During the meeting, Bangladesh urged Pakistan to issue a formal apology for the genocide committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
Speaking at a press briefing after the meeting on Thursday (April 17), Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin shared the developments.
He said that several unresolved historical issues were raised with Pakistan. These included the repatriation of stranded Pakistanis, Bangladesh’s rightful claim to its share of undivided assets, the transfer of foreign aid meant for victims of the 1970 cyclone, and a formal apology for the atrocities committed by Pakistan’s then-armed forces during the 1971 war.
The two sides also discussed restarting direct flights between Bangladesh and Pakistan, enhancing bilateral ties, addressing climate change, and improving transportation and connectivity.
Both countries expressed optimism that increased engagement would help strengthen commercial and diplomatic relations.
Jasim Uddin also mentioned that Pakistan’s Foreign Minister is scheduled to visit Dhaka on April 27–28, with the visit date now confirmed.
