China Attaches Great Importance to Bangladesh Ties: President Xi Jinping

Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China attaches great importance to its relationship with Bangladesh, noting that the two countries have continuously consolidated mutual trust in recent years.

The remarks were made in a congratulatory message exchanged with Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China. The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka shared this information on Saturday (October 4).

In his message, President Xi noted that China and Bangladesh are traditional friendly neighbors with a long history of exchanges.

He highlighted that over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, regardless of changes in the international and regional landscape, the two nations have always fostered friendly relations based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, setting an example of mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation between countries.

India, China to Resume Direct Flights

He further stated that in recent years, China and Bangladesh have strengthened mutual trust, expanded practical cooperation in various fields, including through Belt and Road Initiative, and deepened their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

President Xi reiterated that China highly values its relationship with Bangladesh and stands ready to work with President Shahabuddin to carry forward the traditional friendship, deepen mutual cooperation, and achieve common development. He expressed his goal that this collaboration will better serve the welfare of the people in both countries and contribute more to world peace and development.

In his return message, President Shahabuddin said that over the past 50 years, Bangladesh and China have built a deep friendship based on mutual respect and trust, which has brought tangible benefits to the people of both nations through enduring cooperation.

He expressed Bangladesh's sincere gratitude for China's significant role in promoting regional peace, stability, and common prosperity, and for China’s long-term valuable support for Bangladesh's sustainable development. He expressed confidence that the joint efforts of the leaders and peoples of the two countries will lead to even greater results in bilateral cooperation.

Context of Resignations The interim government had previously appointed three special assistants with the status of State Ministers to oversee key ministries: Prof. M. Aminul Islam: Appointed to the Ministry of Education; he resigned several months ago. Khoda Baksh Chowdhury: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs; he resigned on December 25. Prof. Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman: Vice-Chancellor of BMU, appointed to the Ministry of Health; he has now become the latest to step down. 3-Day State Mourning for Khaleda Zia, Public Holiday Today

The government has declared three days of state mourning from Wednesday to Friday (December 31 to January 2) following the passing of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Jaishankar to Attend Khaleda Zia’s Funeral

Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar is to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow to attend the funeral of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government and people of India at the funeral of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,” the Indian high commission in Dhaka said in a statement this evening. Begum Zia’s Janaza would be held after Zohr prayers while the high commission statement said Jaishankar would accordingly visit Dhaka on December 31. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the morning expressed deep sorrow at Begum Zia’s demise, recalling her contributions to Bangladesh and bilateral relations. “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” he said. The Indian premier recalled her political legacy saying “as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered”. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership,” Modi said.
