Airline tickets from airlines operating in Bangladesh can now be purchased using international cards. The central bank has issued this policy to ensure competitive pricing and provide convenience to passengers.
This information was announced in a circular issued by the Foreign Exchange Policy Department of Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday (November 19).
Key Policy Details
The new circular from the central bank states that resident Bangladeshi nationals can now use their international cards to purchase airline tickets within Bangladesh. This measure is expected to give passengers the opportunity to buy tickets at competitive prices and reduce transaction complexities.
Bangladesh Bank specified the following guidelines:
Fund Collection: The entire sales amount from the ticket must be collected through an Authorized Dealer (AD) Bank to ensure that foreign currency earnings are properly documented in the country.
Card Refill: International cards issued under the Travel Entitlement scheme may be refilled up to the exact amount used for the ticket purchase.
However, the AD Bank must confirm that the entire ticket purchase amount was received through them before authorizing the refill.
Foreign Currency Management
The circular further states that the revenue from ticket sales can be deposited into the airlines' Foreign Currency (FC) Accounts.
Foreign-Owned Airlines: Can remit the funds from these accounts abroad without needing to encash them, if required.
Domestic Airlines: The foreign currency collected must be converted into Bangladeshi Taka (BDT).
Bangladesh Bank affirmed that all other existing rules regarding the use of international cards will remain in effect, and AD Banks must regularly report transaction data to the central bank.
The central bank believes that this new initiative will increase transparency, fair pricing, and convenience for passengers purchasing tickets for foreign travel.
