
The European Union (EU) has officially announced its decision to deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor the upcoming national parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Ivars Ijabs has been appointed as the Chief Observer for the mission.
The announcement was published late Tuesday night (December 16) on the official website of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU's diplomatic wing.
Commitment to Democracy and Neutrality
According to the statement, the decision to deploy the mission follows a formal invitation from the Government of Bangladesh. The EU emphasized that the team will operate with full independence and impartiality to provide a comprehensive assessment of the electoral process.
The notification highlighted that the mission serves as a "tangible example of the EU's support for the people of Bangladesh and their aspirations for strong democratic institutions, the rule of rule, and the protection of human rights."

Expressing his commitment to the role, Ivars Ijabs stated that he is honored to lead the mission during this critical period for the country.
"I am very proud to be entrusted with leading the EU Election Observation Mission to Bangladesh," Ijabs said. "This mission will provide an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process. It reflects the European Union's ongoing support for Bangladesh’s journey toward strengthening democracy and ensuring the rule of law."
