Bangladesh has temporarily suspended all consular and visa services at its Assistant High Commissions in Agartala, Tripura, and Guwahati, Assam, citing security concerns. The suspension in Agartala is effective from Tuesday (December 23) until further notice.
A notification issued by the Agartala mission stated: "For general information, it is hereby announced that due to unavoidable circumstances, all visa and consular services at the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala will remain suspended from tomorrow, December 23, until further instructions."
A similar measure has been taken at the mission in Guwahati. Officials from both missions, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the decision to halt the processing and issuance of visas was prompted by "unforeseen circumstances."
Escalating Security Concerns
This development follows the temporary closure of the Bangladesh Visa Application Center (BVAC) in Siliguri, West Bengal, for similar reasons.
On Monday (December 22) afternoon, protesters from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Hindu Jagran Manch held demonstrations at the Siliguri center.
During the protest, a signboard was vandalized and set on fire. Reports indicate that staff members were also threatened and told to shut down operations.
Following these incidents, DU Digital Global Limited, the private agency responsible for managing the Siliguri center, decided to suspend operations.
Earlier, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi also announced a suspension of its visa services.
These closures come amid a period of heightened tension and reported security threats facing Bangladeshi diplomatic missions across India.
