Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said, in the night I fell asleep leaving my hands under the head on a sofa in the ship. When I woke up I found a pillow under my head. When wanted to know ADC Golam Rabbani said, Bangabandhu has left his pillow under your head.
He said these while reminiscing about Bangabandhu in a discussion held at the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday on the occasion of Independence and National Day.
Mahbub Talukder said, today I am memorizing Bangabandhu. I was lucky to perform my government level job with Bangabandhu. I have many memories of that time. Of those I am going to tell about two.
He said, that was the month of April of 1975. The day when Bangabandhu's father Sheikh Luthfar Rahman died. I passed the whole day with Bangabandhu at 32 number house in Dhanmondi. It was fixed that on the funeral day Bangabandhu will go to Tungipara. There will be the cabinet members, chiefs of three services and other important persons of the government. We started for Tungipara on a ship named Gazi. As I had no previous experience I forgot to take clothes with me. When the ship started journey in the night I found that I had no place to sleep. I found a sofa and went for sleep. ADC of that period Rabbani was there. I woke up in the midnight and found Rabbani awaken. I found a pillow under my head. Being surprised I asked Rabbani- who gave the pillow under my head? Rabbani said, Bangabandhu came in the night to check. He saw that you were sleeping on the sofa keeping your head under the head. Bangabandhu went to his room, returned with a pillow and kept it under your head.
Mahbub Talukder said, I knew that Bangabandhu could not sleep without two pillows. At that time I wanted to go back to Bangabandhu to return the pillow. Rabbani said, no way. Bangabandhu fell asleep locking the door.
He continued, it was 5 am. The ship was moving ahead. There was silence all over. I stepped ahead and found that Bangabandhu was reciting poem sitting on an easy chair. While reciting he was shaking his feet.
After completing reciting he looked at me and said, Mahbub, had you a good sleep in the night? I said, no. Then he said, why? I left a pillow under your head. In answer I said, if somebody like you leave pillow under head of somebody then is it possible for him to sleep more!
Mahbub Talukder memorized another incident- Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the charge as the President on January 25, 1975. On that day he called me and said, Mahbub you have to stay with me. I was given the responsibility of Assistant Press Secretary to the President.
I became very happy after taking the charge. My responsibility was given to take dictation for Bangabandhu's autobiography. It was decided that I would enter the room of Bangabandhu to take dictation during his resting period. He asked me to take dictation by force if he could not provide time for any excuse.
'According to that I took the dictation for three following days but Bangabandhu disagreed on the fourth day. He said, I even cannot take rest for you. Then I told him- you have to provide dictation on different important issues for the chapters of Iyub rule, you six point, days in prison in Pakistan and Agartala conspiracy case. I do not feel comfortable to disturb you during your rest time. So please find a time for me.'
'Bangabandhu said, I am getting all the tasks done, I have arranged all the marriages in my family. I will manage time for giving dictation very soon. Nothing will be left. But aftermath the despicable August came.'
There was pin drop silence when Mahbub Talukder was delivering his speech. Saying just thanks he completed his speech and left the dais for his seat.
