Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Chief of Bangladesh police Monirul Islam said, the militants of Bangladesh at present have no capability to carry out major attack in the country.
He said these at a program titled ‘Meet with Monirul Islam’ organized by Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.
Monirul Islam said, the militants can be inspired by the Sri Lanka attacks, who are idle at the moment following drives conducted by law enforcers in Bangladesh. The security has been beefed up following the gruesome attacks there. Bangladesh law enforcement agency members are active so that the militant organizations cannot raise their heads.
He said, there is no new representative of Islamic State (IS) in Bangladesh.
Monirul Islam said, a number of people joined IS from Bangladesh at the end of 2014. According to our assumption, some were caught, some were killed or traced. At the moment if they (who joined IS) want to return home they have to come through aircraft. For this they will need passport. As they left the country in 2014 so their passports are expired at the moment. They have to apply for passport to return in the country.
About Rohingya involvement in militancy the CTTC unit Chief said, Rohingyas are a big problem for Bangladesh. They may get involved in different activities including social disorder. But we will be able to know about their negative activities through our intelligence information. Efforts are going on to send them back to their country.
He said, those who went to Afghanistan introduced militancy in the country based on religion and violence after coming back. At the first stage many of these ‘importers’ were arrested. Some were hanged. Three to four are absconding but identified.
Who carried out the attacks in Sri Lanka- what do you assume- when asked about this Monirul said, though it is believed that National Tawhid Jamaat of Sri Lanka carried out it but I think there are some international links in this regard.
In the program CRAB president Abul Khayer, general secretary Dipu Sarwar, Deputy Commissioner of DMP media and public relations Masudur Rahman among others were present.
