Commerce Secretary Md. Zafar Uddin said, there is satisfactory stock of local and imported verities of onions. There is no reason to worry about this. Legal action will be taken against those involved in making stock and will try to make the market unstable.
He said these to the newsmen while discussing with them at the secretariat although price of onion has gone up to 100 taka per kg in the local market.
The Commerce Secretary said, we are sending ten teams to inquire about stock situation. These teams will go to district level led by the Joint Secretary, from where most of the onions come. Besides, our officers will visit the land ports like Benapole and Banglabandha to monitor the situation. Onion is a perishable commodity and for that reason no need to stock it. Because there are imported onions in the pipeline.
Zafar Uddin said, so far TCB conducted their activities with 16 trucks. Now we have ordered to sell onions in 35 trucks. We will get the fruitful results very soon. We have mobile court. Four teams including Consumer Rights, Commerce Ministry are working.
He said, we are taking long term planning along with agriculture and other ministries so that no problem would be created regarding onion. The deficit is not huge. As we are self-sufficient in food so we have taken long term plan over onion, garlic and ginger production.
The Secretary said, as India imposed ban on onion export, so there is a little problem. We are not sitting idle. But there is good news that two ships from Myanmar with onions have anchored in Chattogram port. The onions are being unloaded from the ships on priority basis.
