The National Citizen Party (NCP) has described the recent meeting between BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and NCP Convener Nahid Islam as a positive milestone for national politics.
Following the BNP's landslide victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, the two leaders met at Nahid Islam’s residence on Sunday evening (February 15).
NCP Member Secretary and newly elected MP, Akhtar Hossain, addressed the media in a briefing, praising the move as a sign of a shifting political culture in Bangladesh.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
A Gesture of Goodwill: Akhtar Hossain applauded Tarique Rahman for his "political courtesy," stating, "We welcome this gesture. We also congratulate him on his electoral victory."
Signals of Change: The NCP believes that such post-election meetings between rival parties hint at a more collaborative and respectful political environment.
National Interest Over Differences: During the discussion, both sides emphasized working together for the country despite their political differences. Topics included state reforms and ensuring justice.
Ending Violence: BNP reportedly assured the NCP that effective measures would be taken to stop post-election violence. The two parties also discussed support for those affected during the 2024 uprising.
A Unified Vision
Akhtar Hossain expressed hope that while parties will maintain distinct ideologies and programs, they should remain united on critical national issues. "We want an environment where all political parties can stay united on decisions concerning Bangladesh," he stated.
At the conclusion of the visit, the NCP presented Tarique Rahman with a commemorative structure of a Water Lily (Shapla) bud as a token of appreciation.
