In their first official meeting following the swearing-in ceremony, the newly elected Members of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have unanimously elected party Chairman Tarique Rahman as the Leader of the Parliamentary Party.
The decision was finalized during a meeting held at the National Parliament building at 11:00 AM today (February 17).
Path to the Premiership
As the leader of the majority party in the 13th National Parliament, Tarique Rahman is now formally positioned to head the government. This election by his fellow lawmakers is the final internal step before his inauguration as Prime Minister, scheduled for 4:00 PM this afternoon.
A Milestone for the BNP
This marks Tarique Rahman’s official entry into the parliamentary leadership role, following the party’s historic victory in the February 12 elections.
While the BNP MPs notably declined to take the oath for the Constitutional Reform Council earlier this morning, citing legal technicalities, their transition into the legislative branch is now complete.
