Battery operated rickshaws to run in Dhaka

Awami League General Secretary and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that battery-powered three-wheelers will be operating in Dhaka City.

He said this at a discussion meeting at the central office of Awami League on Gulistan Bangabandhu Avenue on Monday (May 20).

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered battery-powered rickshaws to be operated in the city area considering the plight of hardworking people in the low-priced market and considering the price of goods.

However, the general secretary of Awami League also said that battery operated rickshaws will be prohibited for 22 highways of the country.
Earlier, on May 15, Obaidul Quader said that no battery operated rickshaws can be operated in Dhaka.

After that, the auto rickshaw drivers blocked the roads in the capital and set fires and vandalized vehicles in protest against the ban on battery operated rickshaws. Four separate cases have been registered in this incident.

Among the cases, two in Pallabi Police Station, one in Kafrul Police Station and one in Mirpur Model Police Station. Two thousand 700 autorickshaw drivers and arsonists have been accused in the case. So far 42 people have been arrested.
