11 June: PM's release day from prison

Awami League president Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's release day today. She was arrested during the military-backed One-Eleven caretaker government (July 16, 2007).

After her arrest, she was first taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Later from there she was detained in a special prison set up in the Sangsad Bhavan premises. She was released on June 11, 2008 after 11 months of imprisonment.

Sheikh Hasina fell seriously ill while in prison. Then the doctors advised her to seek treatment abroad. After that there was a strong demand for her release nationally and internationally for better treatment.

Awami League also announced that it will not go to the elections if Sheikh Hasina is not released. In view of these demands, the then caretaker government was forced to release Sheikh Hasina.

After being released, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina went to the United States for treatment. While undergoing treatment there, her temporary bail was extended several times.

Then on November 6, 2008, she was granted permanent bail when she returned to the country. Awami League won with a huge majority in the parliamentary elections held on December 29 of the same year. A grand coalition government was formed under the leadership of Awami League on January 6, 2009.

Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has been elected as the Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive term by achieving absolute victory in the National Parliament elections.

On the occasion of the day, Awami League prayed for the countrymen for long life and good health of the Prime Minister.
