Panic sparks as explosions across the border rock Teknaf

The Teknaf border was shaken again amid the conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Tension's around border of Myanmar has risen again since Wednesday (June 26) morning.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Adnan Chowdhury confirmed the incident.

He said, 'The public representatives of the border areas informed me about the sound of gunfire. Due to the conflict situation in Myanmar, the activities of law enforcement agencies, including BGB, Coast Guard, have been increased in the border areas. Bangladesh citizens living along the border have been asked to remain vigilant.'

Meanwhile, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Coast Guard have increased patrolling on the Naf River and border roads in the 54 km area from Hoaikyang to Shahparir Dwip in Teknaf upazila.

Teknaf Shahpari Island UP member Abdul Mannan said, 'I have heard from the border people that there is a lot of firing on the border since morning. However, it is not possible to say exactly in which area this incident is happening due to the Naf River on this side.'

A businessman of St. Martin's Island said over mobile phone that the houses of the island have been shaken by the sound of mortar shells and gunfire since early this morning.'

Teknaf-2 BGB commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Mohiuddin Ahmed said, 'Surveillance on the border has been increased. In addition to strengthening the BGB patrol, we are in a cautious position to prevent Rohingya infiltration.'
