As India and China work through their complex relationship, the ongoing efforts to resolve border disputes and address broader economic issues will be crucial in shaping the future stability and cooperation between these two major global players. News India Today.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently highlighted that 75 percent of the disengagement issues between India and China have been resolved in ongoing border talks. Despite this progress, he acknowledged that some challenges remain. During his conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship between India and China has historically been fraught with difficulties.

Historical Tensions and Recent Developments
Jaishankar noted that the relationship between India and China has not always been smooth. He referenced the events of 2020, when the Chinese military's large-scale movement to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was deemed a violation of multiple agreements. In response, India mobilized its troops to the region. Jaishankar stressed the need for further resolution to achieve complete disengagement and restore peace and stability along the border.

Complex Dynamics of India-China Relations
Describing the India-China relationship as "complex," Jaishankar elaborated on the historical and ongoing challenges between the two nations. He pointed to the clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in 2020 as a significant recent conflict. Jaishankar also discussed long-standing trade issues, characterizing the economic relationship as "unfair and imbalanced," with significant disparities in market access and ongoing concerns in sectors like technology, telecom, and digital industries.

Current Diplomatic Engagements
The 31st meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) was held in Beijing on August 29. Both sides agreed to uphold peace and tranquillity in the border areas in line with existing bilateral agreements and protocols. The meeting was described as "frank, constructive, and forward-looking," with an agreement to enhance communication through diplomatic and military channels.

Broader Challenges and Global Diplomacy
Jaishankar's remarks also touched on broader challenges beyond the border issues, including the technology, telecom, and digital sectors. He highlighted the economic disparities between the two nations, noting that India's market access to China remains limited compared to China's access to the Indian market.

On September 12, Jaishankar arrived in Switzerland following visits to Germany and Saudi Arabia. During his trip to Berlin, he met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and delivered personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As India and China navigate their complex relationship, the focus remains on resolving border disputes and addressing broader economic and technological issues. Jaishankar's comments underscore the intricate nature of bilateral ties and the ongoing efforts to enhance stability and cooperation between the two countries.
