Flood situation worsens in Kurigram, over 1.5 lakh people marooned

Meanwhile, academic activities have been suspended at 37 government primary schools in six out nine upazilas of the district. About 2,300 hectares of croplands also got damaged as flood situation worsens in Kurigram.

People are suffering as their houses have been submerged in flood waters. The families are living inhumane conditions. In most families, the stove has not been burning for 5 days. Their domestic animals have been washed away in the flood. The cattle fodder crisis has arisen due to the submergence of pastures.

The communication system has collapsed due to submergence of unpaved roads in rural areas. There is a shortage of food, clean drinking water, dry food and fuel among the flood dwellers. Flood-affected people are suffering due to the collapse of the sanitation system.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, Abdul Haye Sarker said 282 tonnes of rice and Tk 21.85 lakh have been allocated for distribution among the flood dwellers in nine upazilas so far. About 395 tons of rice, Tk 8.50 lakh and 500 packets of dry food will be distributed in phases.

Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram, Mohammad Saidul Arif said the local administration has been making all-out efforts to reduce the sufferings of the flood victims under the direction of the government. All preparations have been made to deal with floods.
