Death Toll Rises to 7 As Flood Situation Worsens in Sherpur
Seven deaths have been reported in Sherpur and many are missing in the deteriorating flood triggered by continuous rain and upstream torrents.
Nokla police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter on Sunday (October 6). He said, "One person died in Nokla on Saturday night. Additionally, five people died in Nalitabari and one in Jhinaigati upazila due to the flood."
more than 200 villages in 28 unions across five upazilas of Sherpur have flooded, leaving over 150,000 people stranded.
The water levels of various rivers in the district have risen, and new areas are being inundated.
Authorities are concerned about extensive damage to agriculture and crops.
According to the Agriculture Office, at least 30,000 hectares of aman crops and 1,000 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged in the district. At least 70,000 farmers have been affected so far.
Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Sherpur, said on Sunday morning that there was no heavy rain on Saturday night. But it began raining again on Sunday morning.
All kinds of measures have been taken to help flood victims, he says.
