On September 10, 2024, the Russian House in Dhaka held a press conference in honor of the International Day of Journalists' Solidarity, bringing together over 50 young media professionals from across Bangladesh. The event emphasized the challenges journalists face worldwide and highlighted the importance of solidarity, safety, and freedom for those working in the field.
In his opening remarks, P. Dvoychenkov, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, expressed appreciation for the ongoing collaboration between Bangladeshi media and the Russian House, noting the critical role media plays in promoting activities and fostering mutual understanding in today’s interconnected world.
Dvoychenkov also underscored the Russian House’s commitment to supporting a free and dynamic media environment. He recalled the participation of Bangladeshi journalists in the New Generation program, which facilitates short-term study visits to Russia. In 2023, seven Bangladeshi journalists visited Russia under this program, while another group of ten participated in the World Youth Festival in March 2024.
The event concluded with a screening of the Russian family comedy film "Cheburashka," directed by Dmitry Dyachenko. Attendees praised the film for its humor, warmth, and the positive message of friendship and kindness.
The conference provided a platform for open dialogue between the Russian House and Bangladeshi media, reaffirming the importance of continued collaboration in promoting a free and informed media landscape.

Flood situation worsens in Feni, 2 lakhs stuck in water
The flood situation in Feni, Cumilla, and Noakhali has worsened due to relentless rainfall and a rise in the water level of rivers, leaving over 1.5 million people stranded.
On Wednesday (August 21) afternoon, Muhuri river water was seen flowing 86 cm above the danger line.
According to the Water Development Board and local sources, Feni, Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya upazilas are severely affected.
Heavy rains in the last few days and water from India's upstream water entered the locality by breaching the flood control dams of Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers from Tuesday morning (August 20).
Kaptai Dam to be opened at 10 pm
It has been decided to open the 16 spillway gates of the Karnaphuli hydropower station due to the increase in the water of the Kaptai lake.
Gates will open at 10 pm on Saturday (August 24). For this, an urgent warning has been given to the Bhati region.
Confirming the matter, Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) manager ATM Abduzzah said that when the water level in Kaptai Lake rises to 108 feet MSL, the situation will be dangerous. The water rose to 107.63 feet till 2 o'clock on Saturday. So water is expected to rise to 108 feet by evening. In this situation, 6 inches of 16 gates will decide to be released.
Meanwhile, the waters of the Kaptai Lake are reaching near the coastline, flooding the low-lying areas adjacent to the lake. It is expected that many houses near the Kaptai lake will be damaged if the water from the Kaptai dam is not released soon. In this situation, it was decided to open the 16 gates of the dam.
It should be noted that the production of the country's only water power plant has also increased due to the increase of Kaptai lake water. At present, five units are generating a maximum of 219 megawatts of electricity per day.
DMP banned public gatherings several places in Dhaka
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a public notice banning all kinds of meetings, gatherings, marches, processions, demonstrations, etc in the capital on the roads adjacent to the Chief Justice's official residence, Justice Bhaban, Judges Complex, main gate of Bangladesh Supreme Court and Matsya Bhaban.
DMP Commissioner Mainul Hasan informed this in a public notice on Thursday (August 29).
It is stated in the public notice that because of the recent situation, the Hon'ble Chief Justice of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance will proceed from 30th August 2024 (Friday) until further orders.
All kinds of meetings, gatherings, processions, processions, demonstrations, etc are prohibited on the roads adjacent to the government residence, Justice Bhaban, Judges Complex, main gate of Bangladesh Supreme Court, and Matsya Bhaban.

In the viral video, several bodies are seen piled up in a van. Besides, another body is being transferred by the police to the van. The bodies were later covered with a poster. At this time, some other policemen are also seen walking around. Although many have questioned whether those who were wearing police jackets were actually police.
According to Rumor Scan, the much-discussed video of the pile of dead bodies happened in the area adjacent to Ashulia police station. This incident happened on the afternoon of August 5. Besides, two people living around the scene claimed that the poster seen on the wall of the video is Abul Hossain Bhuiyan, candidate for ward number 7 of Dhamsona Union of Ashulia.
It is known that this poster on the wall is not available now. Immediately after August 5, all the walls were repainted.

Dhaka beholds 80mm rainfall in 3 hrs, most streets underwater

BMD meteorologist Md Omar Faruk told the media that heavy rains hit Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions today, Tuesday with 80 millimeters of rainfall recorded in the capital in three hours.

Autorickshaw Driver Killed in Geneva Camp Shooting
An autorickshaw driver named Sonu (32) was shot and killed during a clash between local residents and drug dealers at the Geneva camp in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The incident occurred around 8:30 AM on Wednesday (September 4).
Sonu, a resident of Sector 5 in the Geneva camp, was passing by Kamal Biryani shop when gunfire erupted. His cousin, Sajeev, reported that the clash involved 40 to 50 individuals, including notorious drug dealers Bunia Sohel, Rana, Tuntun, and Babu. During the altercation, Bunia Sohel allegedly fired a shotgun, fatally wounding Sonu. He was rushed to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead.
Sajeev expressed shock over the sudden escalation, noting that fights involving sharp weapons and sticks are common in the camp, but the use of firearms was unexpected. He questioned how such weapons had made their way into the camp, highlighting the brazen nature of the attack.
