New US Chargé d'Affaires Meets Foreign Secretary

Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, newly appointed Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the United States Embassy in Dhaka, called on Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka yesterday.

During this first courtesy call on the Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Jacobson conveyed the full support of the U.S. Government for the Interim Government of Bangladesh reflecting their commitment to democratic values and institutional reforms in Bangladesh.

The discussion of the call on covered various issues of bilateral cooperation including trade, investment, labour sector reforms, human rights, climate issues, and forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

Having welcomed the new CDA a.i., the Foreign Secretary highlighted the reform actions taken by the interim government to fulfill the dream of the youth for a democratic, discrimination-free, equitable and environmental-friendly nation where the human rights of every citizen are fully protected.

The US CDA appreciated the ongoing reform initiatives in which the US side is also involved in.

The discussion highlighted economic cooperation with particular emphasis on expanding trade relations and improving the business environment in Bangladesh.

The Foreign Secretary requested the CDA to take initiatives for the introduction of GSP for Bangladeshi apparel and the re-introduction of the same for other products.

He also sought the support of the US Government to include Bangladesh in the US International Development Finance Corporation. Ambassador Jacobson expressed her commitment to work on these issues during her tenure.

The Foreign Secretary thanked the US Government for its sustained humanitarian assistance regarding the Rohingya issue and sought their active support along with the international community to repatriate the Rohingyas to their homeland (Myanmar).

The meeting was concluded by expressing commitment to working together to achieve new milestones in Bangladesh-U.S. relations in the days ahead. The Foreign Secretary assured her of providing all necessary support from the Ministry during her tenure.
