Expatriates bound for Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries staged a roadblock protest in the capital's Panthapath area after failing to receive vaccines. The protest disrupted traffic in the area, prompting members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Division to arrive at the scene to control the situation.

On Tuesday (January 21), around 10:30 am, approximately 300 expatriates began protesting in front of Square Hospital, blocking the road.

The protesters reported that they were supposed to receive vaccines from various hospitals to meet travel requirements. However, upon visiting the designated hospitals, they discovered that the vaccines were unavailable. They were then directed to Square Hospital, only to solve the same issue. But Square Hospital only administers 10 to 15 vaccines daily, as they do not have more in stock.

Sub-inspector (SI) Md Jubair of Tejgaon Police Station stated that the expatriates blocked the road out of frustration after failing to get vaccinated. They were told by various hospitals to visit Square Hospital for the vaccines. However, Square Hospital only administers 10 to 15 vaccines daily, as they do not have more in stock. Around 300 people arrived seeking vaccines, most of whom are Saudi expatriates, while others are Umrah pilgrims.

Earlier, a new directive was issued by Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport mandating meningitis vaccines for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. The directive follows new instructions from the Saudi Arabian government.

This vaccination directive will come into effect from February 10.
