Following clashes between students of Dhaka University (DU) and the seven affiliated government colleges, additional police forces have been deployed at the Nilkhet intersection in the capital to bring the situation under control.

According to police sources, seven platoons of police were stationed in Nilkhet from Monday morning (January 27), with an additional five platoons kept on reserve at the scene.

Earlier, in the wake of the clashes, all Monday classes and exams at DU were suspended. Subsequently, the final exams of the seven colleges were also postponed.

Notably, on Sunday evening, over 300 students of the seven colleges, who had been demonstrating with a five-point demand, blocked the Science Lab intersection for around four and a half hours. Around 10:30 PM, they marched toward Dhaka University and gathered at Nilkhet near the Freedom and Democracy Arch.

Tensions escalated when several hundred DU students emerged from their dormitories and chased the seven college students. In retaliation, the seven college students regrouped and counter-chased the DU students. This clash left at least 40 students injured.

The seven college students alleged that when they approached DU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) to discuss their concerns about admission seat reductions and other issues, he behaved inappropriately and dismissed them from his office, claiming he was unaware of matters related to the seven colleges.

The students further claimed that despite submitting a memorandum 21 days earlier, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor had not read it and behaved rudely, stating that he did not recognize the students from the seven colleges. This behavior sparked the ongoing student protests.
