The interim government has launched an initiative to modernize Mongla Port, Bangladesh's second-largest seaport, aiming to expand its capabilities. As part of this effort, the construction of two new jetties is progressing rapidly.
In addition to these, there are plans to build four more jetties to increase the port's container handling capacity, with the goal of transforming it into a modern, world-class maritime hub.
On February 2, 2025, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a major project to expand and modernize Mongla Port facilities, costing TK 4,068.23 crore. The project, which will be completed by December 2028, will be funded by the government (TK 475.33 crore) and a loan from China (TK 3,592.90 crore).
According to Zahirul Haque, Chief Planning Officer of Mongla Port Authority (MPA), 62% of the construction work on the two jetties, valued at TK 800 crore, has been completed. The ECNEC has also approved plans for the construction of two more jetties as of February 2, 2025. Haque mentioned that the revised Draft Project Proposal (DPP) for the additional jetties would soon be submitted to ECNEC for approval.
Dredging work is ongoing to ensure the smooth movement of vessels and cargo. Haque emphasized that once the jetties and other associated projects are finished, Mongla Port will become a major regional hub.
For the past three decades, cargo and container operations at Mongla Port have been carried out using outdated machinery. The port's strategic location makes it an ideal gateway for trade with Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Haque also noted that the increasing interest from neighboring countries in using the port has created a need for expansion.
Once the new jetties are completed, cargo and container handling will be significantly improved, boosting the speed of export and import activities.
Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam, a port user, praised the initiatives taken by the interim government to revitalize Mongla Port.
Commodore Md Shafiqul Islam Sarkar, Project Director of the jetty construction, stated that the ongoing work on Jetties No. 3 and No. 4 will be completed within a year and a half, and construction of the next two jetties is set to begin soon.
Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman, Chairman of MPA, highlighted the geographical importance of Mongla Port. He reiterated the government's commitment to developing the port into a regional hub by enhancing its container handling infrastructure. This will further boost international trade with Bhutan, Nepal, and China.
During a recent visit, Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain discussed several key projects, including dredging the Pashur Channel, upgrading port facilities, and constructing two additional jetties.
These initiatives will allow the port to handle 800,000 TEU containers, 4 million metric tonnes of cargo, and 30,000 vehicles annually. The Adviser also encouraged Nepal and Bhutan to use Mongla Port, suggesting it would help boost regional trade and economic growth.
