Death Toll Rises to Seven, Govt Closely Monitoring Situation

A moderate earthquake, measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck Dhaka and other regions of Bangladesh early Friday morning, triggering moments of brief panic among people.

Strong shaking was felt across Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and several neighbouring districts. Many residents rushed out of buildings in alarm as the tremor struck.

At least seven people were killed and more than 100 were injured in different regions and districts of the country.

Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Lalbagh), said three pedestrians were seriously injured when bricks fell from the roof railing of a seven-storey building of deceased Saki Miah on KP Ghosh Street under Bangshal police station.

He said they were rushed to Mitford Hospital, where it was learned that three died there and the deceased could not be identified immediately.

A student of the 52nd batch of Sir Salimullah Medical College, identified as Rafiul Islam, was killed when a building collapsed following the earthquake in Dhaka. The student, Rafiul Islam, lived with his family in Banshal Kasaituli, adjacent to the medical college.

A woman has died after a wall collapsed in the Murapara Union of Rupganj Upazila of the district following a severe earthquake. Her daughter was also injured during the incident.

A one-year-old child was killed and two women were injured when a roadside wall collapsed during Friday morning’s earthquake in Rupganj of Narayanganj.

The deceased, Fatema (1), was the daughter of Abdul Haque of Islamabagh in Ward 5 of Golakandail Union.

A child named Omar (10) was tragically killed in Narsingdi's Gabtali when he was crushed by a collapsing house wall during the recent earthquake.

The child's father, Ujjal, was seriously injured in the incident and is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Over 100 people were injured in Narsingdi. Most of the injured sustained injuries while rushing out of their homes, said witnesses,

The injured are receiving treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said Farida Parvin, Resident Medical Officer of the hospital.

Three students of Dhaka University were injured after jumping from their dormitory buildings in panic.

One student from Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall jumped from the fourth floor and is believed to have suffered a fractured leg. He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Two others—Tanjir Ahmed, a student of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department (2018–19 session), and another student from the Theatre and Performance Studies Department of the same session—were injured after jumping from the third floor of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall.

Govt Closely Monitoring Situation after Earthquake: CA

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said that the government is closely monitoring the situation after an earthquake and instructed all the offices concerned to immediately move to the field level and assess the possible damage.

“The government is aware of the public concern and anxiety following the earthquake tremors felt in different parts of the country. The situation is being closely monitored, and all relevant offices have been instructed to immediately move to the field level and assess any possible damage,” he said in a message, released by his press wing this afternoon.

“The government is taking all necessary measures, giving utmost priority to public safety,” the Chief Adviser said, adding that fire service personnel are quickly responding to the reports of damage coming immediately from various parts of the country, including the capital.

Prof Yunus urged the country’s people not to pay attention to any rumours or misinformation and to remain cautious.
