AL factional clash leaves 3 dead in Narsingdi

Three people were killed and 100 others injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League over establishing supremacy in Nilakkha union of Raipura upazila on Friday.

Two of the deceased were identified as Sohagh Miah and Maram Ali, local residents. Reports UNB.

Zakir Hasan, additional superintendent of police, said former union parishad chairman and former Raipura upazila AL vice-president Abdul Haque and present union parishad chairman and union AL president Tajul Islam had long been at loggerheads over controlling the locality.

As a sequel of the previous enmity, the supporters of both the AL leaders locked into a clash around 3pm.

Equipped with firearms and fishing spears (teta), they attacked each, leaving three people dead on the spot and 100 others injured.

On information, police rushed in and tried to bring the situation under control.

However, sporadic clashes continued till filing of this report around 8pm.

The injured were taken to different hospitals, said Mohsin Alam, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station.

He also said additional policemen were called in to bring the situation under control.

Earlier, a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee was shot dead during a clash between two AL groups at Bashgari of the upazila in the early hours.

The deceased was identified as Tofazzal Hossain Rana, son of local Abdullah Fakir.

The OC said supporters of former Bashgari union parishad chairman and ex-union AL president Shahed Sarkar and current chairman Sirajul Haque, also an AL leader, attacked each other and exchanged gunfire from around 9 pm till midnight on Thursday.

After a short interval, they again exchanged gunfire early Friday.

Tofazzel, who came out of his home to respond to the natural call, sustained bullet injuries to the head around 6 am during the gunfight.

Later, he died on the way to Narsingdi hospital.

Expat killed during campaigning for AL in Sylhet

A Kuwait expatriate and also an Awami League supporter was killed allegedly by BNP men while distributing leaflets in favour of ruling party-backed candidate in Sylhet Sadar upazila on Thursday evening. The deceased was identified as Koysor, son of Mahbub Ali of Nalkhot village under Kandigaon union. Family claimed that Koysor went to the house of Tarique Ullah, a BNP supporter, in the evening for running campaign for AL candidate for the Sylhet-1. During distributing leaflets, he engaged in altercation with some BNP men of the house and at one stage they attacked Koysor, leaving him dead on the spot. However, villagers claimed that Koysor engaged in altercation with Tarique Ullah, Barik Ullah centring a cow that went on missing recently and being injured by the opponents, he died on the scene. Contacted, Jalalabad Police Station officer-in-charge Shah Harunur Rashid said police are investigating the matter. MHK

Businessman held with 8 crore cash for spreading in election field

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained one businessman from Motijheel area in the capital over allegation of influencing the coming election by spreading crores of cash. RAB headquarters Assistant Director Mizanur Rahman delivered the information to the media. Mizanur Rahman said, the detained person named Ali Haider is the managing director of United Corporation, an export-import and contractor company. RAB detained him from his office situated on 27th floor of City Center at Motijheel at around 11 am on Tuesday. Two more people named Alamgir Hossain (38) and Joynal Abedin (45) were also held. RAB said, nearly eight crore taka cash and cheques worth ten crore taka were recovered from Ali Haider. But RAB did not deliver the detail information to whom or which party he was working for. But leaflet of a BNP leader attached with Tarique Rahman’s photograph was found with the recovered money. Besides, a list containing names and address of voters of a constituency of Dhaka was found at the office of Ali Haider. Earlier, police arrested two persons named Shahidul Islam and Muhit from Rajarbag area in the capital over allegation of spreading money among voters on Monday morning. AH

3 held for spreading propaganda on social media

Three people were arrested from Shyamoli area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the city for allegedly spreading propaganda against the state on various social networking sites, including Facebook. The arrestees are Wahidun Nabi, 47, Arafat Hakim, 38, and Mohammad Zavid, 45. Two lawsuits were filed against them with three police stations under the Digital Security Act and the ICT Act for carrying out various subversive plans against the state. MHK

4 bodies of a family recovered in Chandpur

Police have recovered four bodies of a same family in Chandpur Sadar upazila on Monday morning. Chandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasim Uddin confirmed the matter. The deceased were identified as Mainuddin, 26, his wife Fatema Begum, 24, daughter Mithila, 5, and one-year-old son Siam. The bodies were recovered from the house of Barahujur in Devpur village, he said, adding that police initially suspected that the incident might be happened over family feud. MHK
