Various crime and intelligence department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 23 people on charges of selling and consuming drugs in different areas of the capital. During the arrest, 7 thousand 128 pieces of Yaba and 133 kg 160 gram 50 Puria Marijuana were recovered from their custody. As part of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's regular anti-narcotics operation, raids were carried out in various police stations of the capital from 6 am on Monday (December 19) to 6 am today and they were arrested. 21 cases under the Narcotics Control Act have been registered against the arrested police stations.

Police have arrested J K Majlish, known as a composer and music director over the allegation of cheating regarding the case in connection with copyright issue of the program ‘Folk Station’ broadcasted by Rtv. After arresting J K Majlish police produced him before the court and pleaded for seven days remand. On the other hand lawyer of Majlish appealed for bail. The court rejected both the plea for remand and bail but granted permission for quizzing J K Majlish at the jail gate for two days. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed delivered the order. Earlier, on Sunday night police arrested J K majlish from a house located at Road number 6, Mohammadpur Housing Area in the capital. A smart detective team comprising Additional Deputy Commissioner Ishtiaq Ahmed, ppm of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Inspector Asaduzzaman arrested the accused. According to the information of the case, J K Majlish rearranged nearly 250 songs for Rtv’s popular folk music program but after three years he claimed those songs as his own saying that those are copyrighted by his name. Moreover, he published those songs in different online platforms. In this case a firm named Gaanbox associated him illegally. They used to collect songs from other artists and composers and aired those in different online platforms. Earlier, several attempts were made to discuss the matter with J K Majlish. He was tried to persuade the matter that he rearranged the songs under Work for Hire basis. Later he was also served with legal notice. As he did not abide by the directions then Rtv authority filed a case against J K Majlish and two of his associates. The two other accused are Jewel D Costa and owner of Gaanbox Music. The platforms that they used to publish the copyrighted songs are- Spottify, Apple Music, Prime Music, Geo Seven, Dazer, You Tube Music, Star I Tune and some others. Music distribution agency Fuga detected the incident of cheating perpetrated by J K Majlish and his associates.           

A Chattogram court today sentenced five activists of banned Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death in a case filed over the bomb attacks at two Jam-e-Mosques inside the Isha Khan Naval Base at Patenga during the Jumma prayers on December 18 in 2015. The death penalty awarded are former Navy member M Sakhawat Hossain, ballkeeper Abdul Mannan, Ramzan Ali, Babul Rahman alias Roni and Abdul Mannan's elder brother JMB member Abdul Ghaffar. Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal of Chattogram Judge Mohammad Abdul Halim delivered the verdict in presence of four convicted persons except Sakhawat Hossain. According to the prosecution story, in brief, the bomb exploded in the two Jam-e-Mosques inside the Isha Khan Naval base at Patenga within 10 minutes during the Jumma prayers on December 18, 2015. Along with the Navy members, locals also offered prayers in the mosques on Friday. A total of 24 military-civilian people were injured in the blasts. On September 3, 2016, nine months after the explosion, Naval Provost Marshal Commander M Abu Sayed filed two separate cases under the Anti-Terrorism and Explosives Act in the city's EPZ Police Station over the blasts. The accused in the case are former Navy member M Sakhawat Hossain, ball keeper Abdul Mannan, Ramzan Ali and Babul Rahman alias Roni and JMP chief coordinator of Chattogram region Raisul Islam Khan Noman alias Nafis alias Fardin.   Fardin was killed in an explosion while making grenades at Sherpur in Bogra on April 3, 2016. Due to this, his name was excluded from the charge-sheet of the case. Inspector Mohammad Osman Gani of the EPZ Police Station submitted the charge-sheet before the court accusing five JMB men including Abdul Ghaffer on October 15, 2017. The accused were also fined Taka 50 thousand each. In the case, the court framed charges against the militants on January 28 in 2020. After examining 17 prosecution witnesses, out of 24, the court pronounced the verdict today in presence of four convicts. Source: BSS AH

A Dhaka Court today (April 13) sentenced four members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujaheedin Bangladesh (JMB) over the killing of Professor Humayun Azad.      The convicts are - Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaz, Anwar Alam alias Bhagne Shahid, Salehin alias Salauddin and Nur Mohammad alias Sabu.      Judge Al-Mamun of Dhaka's Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict today.      The court also fined them Taka 50,000 each.      During a hearing on January 18 this year, state counsels asked for the capital punishment for the accused. Later on March 27, the court completed the testimonies and fixed today to pronounce the judgement.      Dhaka University Professor Humayun Azad was mercilessly hacked by militants in the University campus area as he was returning from Amar Ekushey Book Fair on February 27, 2004.      His brother Monjur Kabir filed a case over attempt to murder with Ramna Police Station the next day.      After the attack, Prof Azad took treatment in CMH in Dhaka, and Bangkok, Thailand. He died on August 12, 2004, as he was undergoing treatment in Germany. The case later turned into a murder case with his death.      CID inspector and investigation officer Lutfur Rahman filed charge sheet against five, JMB militants Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaz, Anwar Alam alias Bhagne Shahid, Salehin alias Salauddin, Hafiz Mahmud and Nur Mohammad alias Sabu, on April 30, 2012.      Of the five, Minhaz and Anwar are in jail and gave confessional statements. Salahuddin and Nur Mohammad are absconding and Hafiz died.      A total of 41 witnesses including the investigation officer have testified in the case. Source: BSS AH

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka today sentenced Satkhira district Jamaat Amir and former MP Abdul Khaleq Mandal alias Jallad Khaleq and Khan Roknuzzaman, who is absconding, to death in a case of crimes against humanity. A three-member judicial panel led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam, chairman of the tribunal, handed down the verdict. Earlier, on November 11, 2021, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued an order setting aside any day for the verdict (CAV) to be pronounced. Abdul Khaleq Mandal was produced before the court at the time the verdict was announced. The main part of the 208-page long verdict was read out by the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam at 10:30am. Prosecutors Mokhlesur Rahman Badal, Sultan Mahmud Simon and Rezia Sultana Chaman were present at that time.  Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar and Mujahidul Islam Shaheen stood for the accused Khaleq Mandal. While Gazi MH Tamim, being appointed by the state, stood for fugitive accused of the case, Khan Roknuzzaman. The prosecution expressed satisfaction after the verdict as they had pleaded for the maximum punishment. Defendant's lawyer Matiur Rahman Akand, on the other hand, said the verdict would be appealed in the high court. There were four accused in this case. Among the total four accused of the case- Abdullah-hil Baki and Zahirul Islam Tekka Khan, died during the trial.   Charges were framed against the accused on March 5, 2018. A formal complaint was lodged in the case on March 19, 2017. The accused have been charged with seven counts of crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, detention and torture.
