In remembrance of Dhaka University's former Vice-Chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, the university has announced a one-day holiday for Sunday, March 16.
This announcement was made in a press release issued by the university's Public Relations Office on Saturday, March 15.
The university has declared this holiday to honour the late AAMS Arefin Siddique, following its established customs. As per tradition, in the event of the death of a former Vice-Chancellor and professor, the university observes various protocols, including informing the university community about the time and location of the funeral with the family's consent, making public announcements on campus, publishing condolence messages, and organizing special prayers at the central mosque.
The release also stated that the location for the funeral and burial was decided by the family, and the university administration fully respects their decision.
Earlier on March 6, while talking at Dhaka Club in Ramna, Arefin Siddique suddenly collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where it was determined that he had suffered a head injury and a stroke.
After receiving treatment at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital's Neuroscience Unit ICU, he passed away on the night of Thursday, March 13. He was 71 years old at the time of his death.
It was also noted that after his hospitalization, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan visited him on March 7 to assess his condition and treatment. Throughout his time in the hospital, the administration maintained regular communication with his family, friends, and colleagues.
After his passing, the Vice-Chancellor and other senior university officials actively participated in the funeral arrangements and provided full assistance during his burial process.
