The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a historic shift for the film industry’s most prestigious night, confirming that the Oscars will officially leave Hollywood following their 100th anniversary in 2028.

Starting with the 2029 edition, the ceremony will move from its long-time home at the Dolby Theatre on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to the Peacock Theater.

Located within the LA LIVE complex in downtown Los Angeles, the new venue sits adjacent to the Crypto.com Arena, home of the Los Angeles Lakers.

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor expressed excitement over the 10-year deal with AEG, the owners of the complex.

"For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make LA LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema, both for our live in-theater audience and for film fans around the world," they said.

The move marks a major transition for the awards, which have been synonymous with Hollywood since the first ceremony was held at the Roosevelt Hotel in 1929.

The relocation also coincides with a massive shift in media distribution; the 10-year agreement comes as the Oscars exit traditional network television in the United States to be broadcast worldwide via YouTube.

While the move away from the Hollywood district is significant, the Oscars have a history of venue changes, including stints in downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica during the 1960s.

The news follows the recent 2026 awards held on March 15, where Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" took home the Best Picture trophy.
