Renowned actor Chanchal Chowdhury, a dominant figure in the entertainment industries of both Bangladesh and West Bengal, recently shared his insights on cinema, artistic boundaries, and modern audience psychology.
Speaking at the "Baithakkhana" event organized by the Center for Creativity in Kolkata, the actor offered a candid look into his professional philosophy.
Addressing the theme of "Boundaries," Chowdhury noted that while he distinguishes between different types of cinema, he doesn't harbor biases.
"I have no enmity toward commercial cinema, nor a specific partiality toward art films," he said. "I work for the audience."
Selective Excellence
When choosing projects, Chowdhury emphasized that his decisions are grounded in the synergy between the director, co-artists, and technical crew. He highlighted the rigorous preparation involved in Bangladeshi filmmaking, noting that a single project often requires one to two years of discussion and meticulous planning.
Regarding the medium of performance, his stance remains firm:
Learning Through Collaboration
Chowdhury credited cross-border collaborations with enriching his craft, stating that working with diverse creators has broadened his acting horizons.
He also expressed a keen interest in working with new directors, noting that he consistently learns something fresh from the younger generation of filmmakers.
The Social Media "Addiction"
The actor also touched upon the impact of digital culture on the arts. He described social media as an inseparable part of modern reality that often functions like an addiction.
Chowdhury observed that this digital shift is shortening human attention spans, which poses a challenge for audiences engaging with high-quality, long-form dramas or films. However, he acknowledged that in the current era, social media cannot be entirely ignored.
