The government has finalized comprehensive national programs to honor the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has established a national committee and conducted a preparatory meeting to coordinate these elaborate celebrations across various locations significantly tied to the lives and legacies of both iconic poets.
The central national event commemorating Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary is scheduled for May 8, 2026 (25 Boishakh 1433) in Kushtia, a district synonymous with the poet's memory.
Complementing this main event, local administrations in Shahjadpur of Sirajganj, Patisar of Naogaon, and Dakkhindihi and Pithabhog of Khulna will organize Rabindra fairs, discussion panels, and cultural performances.
To mark the occasion, commemorative publications and posters will be released, and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will host a specialized exhibition featuring Tagore’s paintings.
For National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the 127th birth anniversary will be observed on May 25, 2026 (11 Jaistha 1433).
The primary national celebration will take place in Trishal, Mymensingh, where the Prime Minister is expected to grace the occasion as the chief guest.
Similar commemorative programs, including Nazrul fairs and scholarly discussions, are set for Doulatpur in Cumilla, Teota in Manikganj, Karpasdanga in Chuadanga and Chattogram.
In an effort to engage the younger generation, the Nazrul Institute and the Department of Public Libraries will curate book and photo exhibitions showcasing the poet's life and works.
Educational institutions nationwide are also mandated to organize discussions, essay writing, and recitation competitions. These festivities will be broadcast live via Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and various private media outlets.
Furthermore, Bangladeshi diplomatic missions abroad will host their own observances, while the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies will ensure rigorous security for all domestic venues.
