Poet and former television actor Rifat Chowdhury, who gained popularity in Bengali drama, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a serious illness.
Upon admission, he had to spend two days on the floor due to a shortage of hospital beds. Although a bed was later arranged, the physical illness has been compounded by heavy medical expenses.
Following a special report published on Dhaka Post regarding Rifat's struggles, the issue sparked widespread discussion within the showbiz community.
The matter caught the attention of Obhinoy Shilpi Shangho (Actors' Unity), the professional organization of the country's performance artists, prompting them to step forward and support the ailing artist.
On Tuesday, a delegation from the organization visited Rifat Chowdhury at the hospital, checked on his medical treatment, and provided immediate financial assistance. They also promised to remain by his side to help with any further medical needs.
The matter was confirmed on social media by Rashed Mamun Apu, the general secretary of the organization and a well-known actor.
He wrote: "We are all for everyone, each of us for others" — Obhinoy Shilpi Shangho works tirelessly with the commitment to always stand by its members.
Yesterday, a delegation of the organization went to visit popular actor and poet Rifat Chowdhury.
Highlighting the organization's accountability, he further wrote, "We have checked on the overall condition of the ailing actor, provided financial support, and assured him of our constant presence in any time of need. Obhinoy Shilpi Shangho is always sincere regarding artists and everyone involved, and is firmly resolved to stand by them in times of joy and sorrow. We believe that to build a healthy and strong artistic community, there is no alternative to mutual cooperation and empathy."
Reports indicate that Rifat Chowdhury has been suffering from complex waist and leg ailments for a long time.
Due to his illness, he can no longer walk normally.
Furthermore, he has been estranged from his family for many years and, having lost touch with colleagues in the showbiz industry, had been living in isolation for a long time, accompanied only by loneliness.
