Six additional fatalities from dengue alongside 1,942 newly hospitalized cases were recorded across the nation during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Tuesday.

With these latest deaths, the overall nationwide death toll from the mosquito-borne disease has climbed to 239 this year, according to figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Regarding the regional distribution of the latest fatalities, three deaths occurred in the Rajshahi division, while one casualty each was reported in the Dhaka division, the Dhaka South City Corporation, and the Dhaka North City Corporation.

Of the aggregate dengue deaths registered across the country so far this year, men accounted for 47.1 percent of fatalities while women comprised 52.9 percent.

Since January 1, a cumulative total of 77,672 dengue patients have been admitted to hospital facilities nationwide. Among them, 72,008 individuals have successfully recovered and been discharged.

The DGHS report detailed that as of September 28, the highest cumulative death count was registered in the Dhaka South City Corporation with 69 fatalities, followed by 45 in the Khulna division, 29 in the Dhaka North City Corporation, 23 in the Chattogram division, 20 in the Mymensingh division, 18 in the Barishal division, 15 in the Dhaka division, 14 in the Rajshahi division, five in the Rangpur division, and one in the Sylhet division.

In response to the escalating public health challenge, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on September 6 instructed relevant state authorities to step up vector control cleanliness drives and bolster public awareness initiatives nationwide through community participation to curb the disease's transmission.

Earlier on June 6, the government initiated a three-month nationwide campaign designed to foster public awareness regarding dengue control, destroy breeding habitats of Aedes mosquitoes, and promote environmental hygiene.
