Following the ousting of the Awami League through a mass student-led uprising, there have been growing demands to ban the party. The interim government is taking this demand seriously, according to a statement from the press wing of the Chief Advisor released on Friday (May 9).
The statement confirmed that the government has already begun discussions with political parties and will make a decision soon. It also said that the government is reviewing a United Nations report highlighting alleged terrorist activities by Awami League leaders and supporters. Citizens have been urged to remain patient during this process.
Responding to public pressure, the government has already banned the student organization Chhatra League, labelling it a terrorist group under existing law.
Additionally, the government is working to amend the International Crimes Tribunal Act to take legal action against organizations accused of crimes against humanity.
The statement also acknowledged public anger over the recent foreign trip of former president Abdul Hamid, who is a murder suspect and associated with the previous authoritarian regime. The government pledged to take appropriate legal action against all involved in that incident.
