Chinese exports decline 4.6% after seven years amid economic crisis

Amid the economic crisis, Chinese exports saw a downfall for the first time since 2016 after global demand for Chinese-made goods slowed in 2023, CNN reported citing the Customs data released on Friday.

According to CNN, the Chinese economy is struggling to stem deflationary pressures and consumer price inflation in 2023 was the weakest it has been in 14 years.

Chinese exports were measured at USD 3.38 trillion in 2023, down by 4.6 per cent compared to the year before. In 2022, Chinese exports increased by 7 per cent from the year earlier. The last time China registered a decline in overseas shipments was in 2016 when exports fell 7.7 per cent.

Imports also fell last year, by 5.5 per cent to USD 2.56 trillion, CNN reported, adding that it left the world's second-largest economy with a trade surplus of USD 823 billion.

"The global economic recovery has been weak in the past year," Lyu Daliang, a spokesperson for the General Administration of Customs, told a Friday press conference in Beijing, adding, "Sluggish external demand has hit China's exports."

He added that he expects China to continue facing 'difficulties' on export markets as global demand is likely to remain weak and "protectionism and unilateralism" hinder growth.

The consumer price index for December improved slightly from November, but was down 0.3 per cent on the same month in 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday.

For 2023 as a whole, prices were up by just 0.2 per cent over 2022, the weakest reading since 2009, when CPI fell by 0.7 per cent as a global recession hit.

China is suffering a double-whammy of weak demand at home and abroad.

December was the third month in a row that the consumer inflation gauge has fallen year-on-year, marking the longest run of declines since 2009. Food prices, especially the prices of pork, were a major drag.

"Ongoing low core CPI inflation likely reflects dampened domestic demand due to the ongoing property downturn and stressed labour market," Goldman Sachs analysts said on Friday.

According to CNN, the factory-gate prices were also subdued. The Producer Price Index dropped 2.7 per cent in December from the same period in 2022, the 15th consecutive month of declines. For 2023, the PPI fell 0.3 per cent.
Looking ahead, analysts from Capital Economics expect core inflation to rise slightly, helped by a cyclical recovery in the Chinese economy. But deflationary pressures won't go away.

"Weak global growth and continued over-investment in China means that deflation risks will continue to hang over its economy for some time," said analysts from Capital Economics on Friday.

At USD 240 billion, trade with Russia hit a new record high in 2023, up 26 per cent from the previous year. Overall, it made up 4 per cent of China's total trade.

The United States remained China's largest single-country trading partner in 2023, accounting for 11.2 per cent of total trade. However, that represented a drop in 2022 -- the first fall since 2019, when Washington and Beijing were in the middle of a prolonged trade war.

ASEAN, the 10-member bloc in Southeast Asia, and the European Union accounted for 15.4 per cent and 13.2 per cent of total trade with China, the Chinese customs figures showed.
The country also registered a 69 per cent surge in the total value of automobile exports last year, the highest among all categories, CNN reported.

By volume, China shipped 5.22 million vehicles in 2023, up 57 per cent from 2022. That's in part thanks to surging growth in electric vehicles, said Lyu.

"One out of every three cars exported by China is an electric passenger vehicle," he said at the press conference.
"Looking to the future, we believe that China's auto industry still has a strong comprehensive competitive advantage and can continue to provide more and better innovative products to meet the needs of global consumers," he added.

Earlier this week, a major Chinese car industry group said the country is "certain" to have surpassed Japan to become the world's largest car exporter last year, driven by strong demand in Russia and growing global appetite for EVs.
The rankings will be confirmed once Japan's official annual figures are released, which are expected in the next few weeks.

South Korean Court Issues Arrest Warrant for President Yoon

A court in South Korea has approved an arrest warrant to detain impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived imposition of martial law earlier this month. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials said in a statement on Tuesday that the Seoul Western District Court issued the warrant. The agency said it was probing whether Yoon's December 3 martial law decree amounted to rebellion. It was not immediately clear when or how the arrest warrant for Yoon will be carried out. On Tuesday, South Korea's presidential security service issued a statement saying it will treat the arrest warrant according to due process. The impeached president's lawyer said that the arrest warrant was "illegal and invalid", "The arrest warrant and search and seizure warrant issued at the request of an agency without investigative authority are illegal and invalid," Yoon Kab-keun said in a statement sent to news agency AFP. The lawyer added that the body investigating Yoon Suk Yeol "lacks investigative authority." The prosecutors' application for a warrant, sought on Monday, is believed to be the first attempt to forcibly detain a sitting president in the country's constitutional history. Why did investigators seek the arrest warrant? Yoon has circumvented several requests to appear for questioning by the joint investigation team and public prosecutors. He has also blocked searches of his office related to the investigation. Investigators are planning to question Yoon on charges of abuse of authority and orchestrating a rebellion. The martial law declaration drew immediate opposition from politicians, with lawmakers having quickly passed a resolution demanding Yoon lift his order. On December 14, lawmakers voted to impeach the president over his failed attempt to impose military rule, suspending his presidential powers. However, it is up to the Constitutional Court to decide whether to confirm the impeachment and remove Yoon from office or restore his powers. The process could take months. North Korea's Kim Calls Putin His 'Dearest Friend'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday called Vladimir Putin his "dearest friend and comrade" in his letter to the Russian president praising the close ties between the two countries. Kim sent New Year greetings "to the fraternal Russian people and all the service personnel of the brave Russian army on behalf of himself, the Korean people and all the service personnel of the armed forces of the DPRK," the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, using an acronym of the North's formal name. He also expressed his readiness "to design and push ahead with new projects" after their "meaningful journey in 2024." North Korea's troop deployments to Russia In a possible reference to Russia's war in Ukraine, Kim wished that 2025 would be the year "when the Russian army and people defeat neo-Nazism and achieve a great victory." Seoul and Washington have accused Pyongyang of sending tens of thousands of troops to help Russia fight Ukraine. North Korean troops are experiencing mass casualties on the frontlines of Russia's war against Ukraine, the Biden administration said last week. UNGA President, Dr. Khalilur Rahman Discuss 2025 Rohingya Conference

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Adviser on Rohingya Crisis and Priority Issues, met Ambassador Philemon Yang, the President of the UN General Assembly (PGA), in New York yesterday. The main point of discussion was the modalities and objectives of the upcoming International Conference on the Rohingya Crisis, to be convened by the UN in 2025 as per a UN General Assembly consensus resolution adopted this year. The idea of such a conference was initiated by the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during his statement in the UN General Assembly in September 2024, with a view to finding out sustainable and peaceful solution of the Rohingya issue. During the discussion, Dr. Khalilur Rahman expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to fully assist the UN for holding the conference. He informed Ambassador Yang that keen interest is already being raised among the international community about the conference and its outcome. He apprised the PGA about latest political developments in the region; and Bangladesh Government’s willingness and efforts towards effective engagement with and cooperation from all parties concerned for sustainable repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas. While stressing upon the need for early repatriation of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas which is essential for ensuring peace and stability of the whole region, the discussions also highlighted the emerging need of providing humanitarian assistance to Rakhine State in view of recent developments. PGA Ambassador Yang appreciated Bangladesh’s proactive role in the UN on critical issues. China Firing Preemptive Trade War Shots at Trump

China has heightened trade war tensions with the United States by extending existing tariffs imposed on a crucial chemical solvent, sanctioning seven American firms on security grounds and threatening to stop buying US semiconductors within a single day. China’s Ministry of Commerce (MoC) announced on December 27 that it will continue to impose anti-dumping duties on n-butanol imports from the US, Taiwan and Malaysia for another five years, effective from December 29, 2024. The MoC said removing the anti-dumping duties would likely lead to a resumption or continuation of dumping practices and subsequent harm to China’s domestic n-butanol industry. N-butanol is a key organic chemical used in the production of various products including paints, adhesives and plasticizers. On December 29, 2018, China imposed 52.2-139.3% tariffs on n-butanol imports from the US and 12.7-26.7% tariffs on those from Malaysia. A 56.1% duty was imposed on all Taiwanese firms, except Formosa Plastics Corp, which only paid 6%.
