Iran's Supreme Leader appointed Mokhber as interim president

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced five days as public mourning for the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash and appointed First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as interim head.

Mokhber will take over the country's executive branch based on Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution.

Before a presidential election, Iran only has a maximum period of 50 days. The election must be held to choose Raisi's successor in the deu time.

'I announce five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear people of Iran,' Ali Khamenei said in a statement, news agency IRNA reported.

' Mokhber will manage the executive branch and is obliged to arrange with the heads of the legislative and judicial branches to elect a new president within a maximum of 50 days,' the supreme leader said.
