West Bengal Assembly Passes Bill Advocating Death Penalty for Rapists
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed the 'Aparajita Women and Children (Criminal Law Amendment of West Bengal) Bill,' which seeks to impose the death penalty in cases of rape and murder, or when the victim is left in a vegetative state.
The bill was approved by voice vote on Tuesday, with the BJP Legislature Party choosing not to demand a division of votes.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in her address, described the bill as an amendment to relevant provisions under the Indian Justice Code 2023, the Indian Civil Protection Code 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act 2012.
She criticized the Prime Minister for failing to take sufficient action to protect women, stating that both he and the Union Home Minister should resign over their inaction.
The Mamata government introduced the bill amid nationwide outrage following the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The Chief Minister called for the CBI, currently investigating the case, to deliver justice for the victim.
Banerjee urged the Governor to promptly approve the bill so it could be sent to the President for final assent, emphasizing the state's commitment to enforcing the law.
She also criticized BJP MLAs for remaining silent on similar incidents in BJP-ruled states, highlighting the hypocrisy of their stance.
