Severe Floods in Myanmar Claim 236 Lives
Typhoon Yagi has triggered devastating floods across multiple regions in Myanmar, leading to the tragic loss of at least 236 lives. This information was reported by Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based news outlet, on Tuesday (September 17).
According to local officials cited by Myanmar's state-run Global New Right, 77 people are still missing. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the actual death toll could be even higher.
OCHA reported on Monday that hundreds of people have perished in the floods, with many still unaccounted for. The flooding has impacted approximately 631,000 people.
Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm of the week, affected China, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. Myanmar has experienced floods in at least nine regions, including Mandalay, Kayah, Kayin, Shan states, and the capital Naypyidaw.
OCHA emphasized the urgent need for food, water, medicine, shelter, and clothing in the affected areas. However, damaged roads and bridges have hindered relief efforts. The agency also noted that only 25 percent of Myanmar's humanitarian needs have been funded this year, with the response severely impacted by "critical underfunding."
