14 Dead as Typhoon Trami Strikes the Philippines
At least 14 people have lost their lives as tropical cyclone Trami wreaked havoc in the Philippines. Thousands of people have evacuated their homes as the typhoon approaches the country's eastern coast.
According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (October 23), rescue efforts are underway to assist residents trapped in high-risk areas. Torrential rains have transformed roads into rivers, and entire villages have been submerged underwater.
Police Chief Erwin Rebelon told the AFP news agency that at least 12 people died in Naga City, located in the Bicol region, though further details are yet to emerge.
The regional civil defense office confirmed two more deaths in other parts of the Bicol region. In Palanas, Masbate province, a 22-year-old man was killed by a falling tree branch, while in Bagamanoc, Catanduanes province, a 71-year-old man lost his life. Additionally, five fishermen have been reported missing.
Authorities report that around 32,000 people have fled their homes in northern Philippines. The typhoon is now nearing Luzon, the country’s main island.
Regional police spokesperson Louisa Calubacib told AFP that they deployed rescue teams, but some areas remain inaccessible due to severe flooding and strong currents.
