At least 40 farmers were killed in an attack by gunmen in Nigeria. This information was reported by Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera on Monday (January 13).

According to the report, armed groups detained dozens of farmers in Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria, and later shot them dead in the middle of the night. Efforts are ongoing to locate and return those who fled the attack to their families.

Provincial Information Commissioner Usman Tar suspects that Boko Haram and fighters aligned with the Islamic State in West Africa Province were involved in the attack.

He stated that efforts are underway to find those who escaped the attack and return them to their families. The provincial government has also issued orders to identify and eliminate the insurgents.

Meanwhile, the province's governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered an investigation into the attack and urged civilians to stay within designated safe areas.

Notably, the Boko Haram group took up arms in 2009 to fight against Western education and to impose its version of Islamic law.
