Tulip Siddiq was appointed to the UK’s anti-corruption role to serve the interests of the ruling party, according to a report by British newspaper The Guardian. The report was published on Tuesday (January 14), following Tulip's resignation.

The Guardian stated that certain individuals within Downing Street had promoted Tulip to ministerial status to serve their own interests, using her as a banner for the Labour Party or the ruling establishment.

However, after her aunt Sheikh Hasina’s ousting from power in Bangladesh, those in Downing Street might now be reconsidering their decision to bring Tulip to the forefront. This attitude is attributed to the growing clarity of her connections to the corruption of the then-Awami League government.

When Tulip was appointed as the UK government's anti-corruption minister, Sheikh Hasina’s government was quite influential. Tulip's family prestige made her highly regarded. Awami League leaders and activists supported the Labour Party's electoral campaign, working tirelessly for both Tulip Siddiq and Keir Starmer.

However, had the current situation in Bangladesh existed at that time, those within Downing Street might have thought twice before assigning her the responsibility.

Tulip's name has surfaced in connection with Sheikh Hasina's government’s corruption. She reportedly acquired two flats in the UK from Awami League affiliates. Additionally, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed three separate cases alleging abuse of power and fraud related to the allocation of plots in Purbachal New Town.

The accused in these cases include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana’s son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, and daughters British MP Tulip Siddiq and Azmyna Siddiq Rupanthi.

Akhtar Hossain, Director General of Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission, stated that British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq influenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding the plot allocations in Purbachal New Town. The ACC has sufficient evidence regarding this matter, and three separate cases were filed on Monday (January 13).

The news also gained traction in the UK. In addition to these allegations, Bangladesh authorities are investigating Tulip’s involvement in other cases related to embezzlement.

A Labour MP, speaking anonymously to The Guardian, remarked that Tulip’s ministerial appointment was a strategic move by the ruling party. It was widely known that she was part of a powerful and wealthy political dynasty in Bangladesh. "Who in the world thought that by giving her this job, she would escape public scrutiny?" they added.
