Qatar Hopes for Palestinian Authority's Return to Power in Gaza
Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, has expressed hope that the Palestinian Authority will soon return to governance in the Gaza Strip.
He conveyed this optimism during a speech at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, January 21, as reported by Al Jazeera.
On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas launched a surprise attack after crossing into Israel's border, which led to a series of retaliatory assaults by Israel in Gaza. Over a year of destruction has ensued in Gaza under Israeli military operations.
The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that 47,035 Palestinians have been killed so far, with another 111,091 injured. The majority of the casualties are women and children.
Qatar’s Prime Minister warned that the governance of Gaza should be determined by its people, not by any external country. He emphasized, "We want to see a government that genuinely addresses the issues of the local population. Gaza has a long way to go."
The ceasefire agreement, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, includes terms for a ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners, and the increase of humanitarian aid. However, the future governance of Gaza was not directly addressed in the latest agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Israel has rejected any form of governance by Hamas in Gaza, although Hamas had been in control of the region prior to the conflict.
Following over 15 months of brutal Israeli assaults on Gaza, Hamas and Israel agreed to a three-phase ceasefire mediated by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. This ceasefire took effect on Sunday, January 19.
