470 Days Later, Over 300,000 Palestinians Return to Northern Gaza
After nearly 15 months of relentless destruction in the besieged Gaza Strip, Israel implemented a ceasefire on January 19. During this period, the Israeli forces carried out indiscriminate attacks under the pretext of eliminating Hamas, leaving no place in the valley safe. The northern region of Gaza suffered the most devastation.
In a desperate attempt to survive, most residents of northern Gaza sought refuge in the southern and central regions. With the ceasefire in effect, displaced residents of northern Gaza have begun returning to their areas.
On Monday (January 27), over 300,000 Palestinians returned to the most devastated parts of the valley, according to a statement from Gaza’s Public Relations Office, as reported by AFP.
The statement mentioned that a large portion of northern Gaza residents had taken shelter in the southern and central regions of the valley. After 470 days, they are finally returning to their homes.
In northern Gaza, reduced to rubble by Israeli bombings, no houses remain intact. Despite the destruction, residents are overjoyed to return to their areas after nearly 15 months.
From early Monday morning, thousands of Palestinians began entering northern Gaza through the Netzarim Corridor. Many carried their belongings in horse-drawn or donkey carts. A banner reading "Welcome to Gaza" was seen hanging in front of a damaged building on the main road in Gaza City, the central city of northern Gaza.
Lamis Al-Iwadi, a 22-year-old resident of northern Gaza, expressed her joy at returning home after so long. Speaking to AFP, she said, “Today is the happiest day of my life. I feel as though I was dead all this time; today, life and soul have returned to my body.”
The widespread rubble around her did not dampen her spirit. She told AFP, “We will rebuild our homes again, even if we have to use sand and mud.”
A Hamas spokesperson told AFP that the returning families, who have lost their homes, urgently need at least 135,000 tents for temporary shelter.
On August 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack on Israeli territory, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip. The operation, which lasted 15 months under the pretext of eliminating Hamas, claimed the lives of over 47,000 innocent Palestinians, most of them women and children. Additionally, more than 112,000 were injured, and over 2 million Palestinians were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge elsewhere in Gaza.
