Fifty thousand Palestinians returned to Gaza in a single day, according to the Hamas-controlled Civil Defence agency, on the second day of the ceasefire between occupying Israel and the Palestinian liberation organization Hamas.
The displaced Palestinians returned to Gaza City on Saturday (October 11). Upon arriving in the city, which has been reduced to rubble, some were stunned by the devastation, while others felt relief upon finding their homes still standing.
Mohammed Al-Mughayir, an official from the Hamas-controlled Civil Defence agency, stated that a total of approximately 250,000 people have returned to Gaza City since last Friday.
The Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel reported that a Palestinian woman named Raja Salmi walked back to her home in Gaza City, taking advantage of the ceasefire.
The region had been subjected to intense bombing during weeks of air and ground operations—where Israeli forces claimed thousands of Hamas fighters were based.
Raja said, "We walked for hours. Every step was filled with fear and anxiety—wondering if the house was even there."
Upon reaching the Al-Rimal neighborhood, she reported that her home was gone, saying, "It is no longer a house—just rubble. I stood there and cried. All my memories are now just dust."
