Israel's military has launched attacks in Gaza after an alleged Hamas violation of the ceasefire. The Gaza Health Ministry says it has received the bodies of 15 prisoners held by Israel.
Israeli planes have carried out strikes near Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip in response to an alleged breach of the current ceasefire by Hamas, Israeli media reported on Sunday.
An Israeli official told AFP news agency that Hamas militants had launched multiple attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza. "The terror organization Hamas carried out multiple attacks against Israeli forces beyond the Yellow Line," the official said, referring to the boundary beyond which Israeli forces hold positions.
According to the Times of Israel newspaper, Hamas has claimed it was attacking an Israeli-backed militia and not IDF troops.
Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called for a renewed war against the Palestinian militant group following the alleged clashes. Smotrich published a brief social media post after the announcement, which read only "War!"
Far-right minister Ben-Gvir calls for resumption of war
Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called on the government to restart the war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas after reports that it had attacked Israeli troops.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to instruct the armed forces to "fully and with full force resume combat operations in the Gaza Strip."
"The deceptive notion that Hamas will change its stance or even adhere to an agreement it has signed is, as expected, proving dangerous to our security," Ben-Gvir wrote.
"The Nazi terrorist organization must be completely destroyed," he went on, adding that the sooner this happens, the better.
Gaza health authorities confirm arrival of bodies of 15 Palestinians
Israel has returned the bodies of 15 Palestinian prisoners to Gaza, bringing the total number handed over to 150, the Health Ministry in the Palestinian territory said.
Under a US-brokered ceasefire deal, Israel is obliged to send back the bodies of 15 Palestinians for each body of a deceased hostage from Israel returned by Hamas.
Late on Saturday, Hamas returned the remains of two more hostages. They have been identified as Ronen Engel, an Israeli national, and Thai farmworker Sonthaya Oakkharasri.
