Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered immediate, powerful air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip, according to the Qatar-based news agency Al Jazeera.
Observers fear that Netanyahu's order for new attacks will further worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. However, Israeli authorities have not yet clarified when or where these strikes will be carried out.
The Israeli government stated that the decision was made in response to Hamas's alleged violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Israel claims that Hamas has not yet handed over the bodies of 13 Israeli captives still believed to be in Gaza, which Israel considers a clear breach of the agreement.
Hamas, on the other hand, stated that expert teams and heavy machinery are required to retrieve the bodies buried under the rubble. While Israel has allowed limited assistance for this purpose in recent days, it has not yet been possible to recover all the bodies.
Mediating nations, along with Israeli and US officials—including President Donald Trump—were reportedly aware beforehand that retrieving the bodies of hostages trapped under the rubble would be an extremely difficult task.
Under the current ceasefire agreement, the bodies of the hostages held by Hamas were to be returned, in exchange for Israel's promise of a partial suspension of its military operations.
However, the difficulties in recovering the bodies have once again heightened tensions.
According to analysts, the failure to recover the bodies is being used as a justification for Israel's military response, further plunging the future of the ceasefire into uncertainty.
