Over 100,000 residents have been evacuated from the eastern and northern regions of the Philippines as Typhoon ‘Fung-Wong’ (locally known as Uwan) intensified into a Super Typhoon.
It is expected to make landfall late on Sunday (November 9) local time.
The powerful storm is threatening to unleash torrential rains, destructive winds, and storm surges, according to Reuters.
Storm Intensity and Alerts
Typhoon Fung-Wong is currently carrying sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (115 mph) and gusts of up to 230 kilometers per hour (143 mph).
Local weather forecasts predict the Super Typhoon will make landfall in Aurora province in central Luzon, either late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
The Philippine Civil Aviation Authority reported that more than 300 domestic and international flights have been cancelled due to the severe weather warnings.
Preceding Devastation from Kalmaegi
The impending threat from Fung-Wong comes just days after the Philippines was ravaged by Typhoon Kalmaegi (locally known as Tino/Kamaelgi).
The government has already declared a state of emergency due to the widespread devastation from Kalmaegi. Local residents have been instructed to move to safe locations, and schools have cancelled or moved classes online for Monday.
