At least 17 people were killed and 20 injured in a bus accident carrying schoolchildren in a rural area of northern Colombia.
The local governor provided this information on Sunday night (December 14), according to a Reuters report.
The report stated that the disaster occurred when a bus carrying school students drove off the road and plunged into a mountainside ravine in a rural area of northern Colombia.
Local media reported that the accident happened around 5:40 AM on Sunday on a road connecting Remedios and Zaragoza in the El Chispero area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus, which was carrying 45 passengers, fell approximately 80 meters (262 feet) into the ravine. The deceased include the bus driver.
School authorities mentioned that the students themselves had organized the trip.
In a post on the social media platform X earlier on Sunday, the Governor of Antioquia, Andres Julian, stated that the bus was traveling from the Caribbean city of Tolú toward Medellín.
The students of an Antioquian high school had gone on a sea trip as part of an educational excursion.
He further added that the students were on an educational trip to the seaside as part of celebrations following their annual exams.
He commented that this is a deeply heartbreaking piece of news for the entire community during this time in December.
