A Hong Kong court has found pro-democracy activist and leader Jimmy Lai guilty of collusion with foreign forces and sedition.
The court convicted him on all charges under Hong Kong's controversial National Security Law on Monday (December 15) local time. The court will announce his sentence at a later date.
Before the conviction on Monday, the judge stated that Lai was a threat to national security. The court described him as the mastermind behind the conspiracy to collude with foreign forces.
The 78-year-old Lai was charged with conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security under Hong Kong's National Security Law.
A separate charge of conspiracy to publish seditious material was also brought against him. Lai, however, had pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has been in custody since December 2020.
Tension had been building around the verdict announcement in Jimmy Lai's landmark case. Although the verdict was scheduled for Monday, his supporters had been lining up outside the Hong Kong High Court since Sunday night.
Meanwhile, international pressure is mounting for the release of Lai, a critic of the Chinese government. Jimmy Lai has already spent five years in jail. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges brought against him.
It is expected that he could face life imprisonment after being convicted on two of the charges: conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security.
