At least 50 migrants are feared dead after their vessel capsized in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting the perilous journey to Europe.
The tragic incident occurred late Sunday night (January 25), according to reports from the international news organization Anadolu Agency. The victims had reportedly been at sea for nearly 24 hours after departing from the coast of Tunisia.
Sole Survivor Rescued
Malta’s rescue teams confirmed that only one individual has been found alive so far. The Armed Forces of Malta stated that a male migrant was pulled from the water by a cargo ship near the Tunisian coast on Friday (January 24).
The survivor was immediately transported to Malta for medical treatment. Details regarding his nationality, as well as the identities of those missing at sea, have not yet been disclosed.
A Dangerous Route
The vessel originated from the shores of Tunisia, a common departure point for North African transit. Every year, thousands of migrants from various Asian and African nations risk their lives in small, overcrowded, and unseaworthy boats, hoping to reach European soil.
This latest disaster highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, which remains one of the deadliest migration routes in the world.
